This piece features the artist’s nephew, Louka, posing on a graffitied London Underground train. It continues an ongoing exploration of trains and graffiti, while marking the second work in which a human figure appears. Louka, who lives in India, holds a close personal significance for the artist; the physical distance between them, combined with his creative nature, makes him a meaningful subject. The work situates Louka within the urban environment his mother grew up in, creating a contrast with the context of his upbringing in India. This juxtaposition forms a dialogue between place, identity, and familial connection. The piece is created through meticulous layers of sifted vitreous enamel on copper, fired in the artist’s kiln up to nine times.

The enclosed setting compresses the image, drawing attention to the weight of the environment and the quiet presence of the train. The phrase “Belly of the Beast” refers to this location’s nickname, alluding to its central position in London and the difficulty of access, reinforcing a sense of depth, enclosure, and isolation within the network.

This piece depicts a discontinued C Stock train in a former London Underground depot that once lay beneath the Earl’s Court Exhibition Centre. Both the exhibition centre and a section of the depot were demolished together, along with surrounding communal housing, to make way for new luxury developments, a process that contributed to the displacement of local communities. The work reflects on the loss of industrial and communal spaces, and the transformation of familiar environments through redevelopment. The title, What a Shame, conveys a sense of absence and erasure, acknowledging what has been removed and replaced. The subject is presented as a quiet record of a place that no longer exists, highlighting the tension between preservation and progress, and the shifting identity of the city over time.
